Bastrop ISD
Growth defines the current nature of Bastrop and its Academically Acceptable student population. Noted as one of the oldest established communities in Texas, incorporated in 1837, Bastrop has maintained its historic roots in architectural preservation and the tourism that comes with its antique and Bed and Breakfast community (Also of is the Lost Pines area, an isolated forested zone of loblolly pine amongst hardwoods in Bastrop State Park, an almost 6,000-acre park just 30 miles outside of Austin.
Only 20 miles from the 1999-built Austin International Bergstrom Airport, and new home to the luxurious, 405-acre Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort, Bastrop has flown off the map.
With affordable homes, a rural and consistent 30-35 minute commute to Austin, a unique landscape and manageable community, Bastrop has enjoyed a population increase of @ 37% between 2000 and 2005. Becoming a county population of over 70,000, the area earned the 59th spot as fastest growing county in the country.
With growth, curiously, the academic climate from 5th grade to 12th has stayed steady, but more curiously, fallen from Recognized to Academically Acceptable in ALL the six elementary schools. Changes in testing may be the culprit, but in this rapidly growing community, all school websites state determination to climb to Exemplary.
In addition to six elementary schools, the Bastrop district consists of two intermediate schools (grades 5 and 6), and two middle schools for grades 7 and 8. Bastrop Middle has recently become a basketball powerhouse with the 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys as champs or co-champs for the 2007-2008 seasons. All schools range from 500 to 700 students.
Bastrop High hosts the later grades, as well as Genesis High School, an alternative school geared toward students who have dropped out of a traditional school or considered to be at-risk, allowing students to work at their own pace to achieve their education standard.
Bastrop High houses over 2200 students, offers over 25 clubs and extra-curricular activities. Although their football team took a beating during the 2007 season, the boys and girls basketball teams will both enjoy winning seasons.
The high school scores just below in College Board averages, and almost 20% of the student population is involved in advanced placement coursework.
*In addition to completion and drop out rates, the Texas Education Agency rates area schools in part based on results from the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Tests.
