Blanco ISD
Quickly becoming a destination due to the area’s rural, bucolic beauty and hugely popular annual Blanco Lavender Festival celebrating the 12+ lavender farms in the region, Blanco’s come onto the radar for second homes, ranches and for those who can take advantage of the short commutes to Austin (45 minutes from the “Y” in Oak Hill) and San Antonio, whose international airport is 40 minutes due south from Blanco on Highway 281.
Rumor has it that celebrities have quietly found solace in the Blanco area, including homesteads or retreats for Shelley Duval, Sam Elliott and John Travolta, and Blanco is home to a former ranch of Jimmy Stewart.
For students in the area, Blanco’s small town feel is apparent in its small and manageable district size of 983 students and three schools; Blanco Elementary, Blanco Middle and Blanco High Schools. All three schools are Academically Acceptable.
At Blanco Elementary, the school (which fell from Recognized to Acceptable in 2007) hosts 11.6 students per teacher, teachers who average 13.4 years of teaching experience.
At Blanco Middle School, 247 students benefit from an 11.9 student per teacher ratio, and teachers average 12 years of teaching experience.
324 students attend Blanco High School at a ratio of 11 students per teacher, who average 14.4 years of teaching experience. Academics are quite competent at the rural school, with over 91 per cent of the senior class graduating with mean college board scores on the SAT and ACT being 1026 and 21 respectively. Both are higher than the state average. The school was just by the TEA via the Texas Success Initiative for a Gold Performance Acknowledgement in Math in 2007, and almost 30 per cent take part in Advanced Placement courses in 13 areas ranging from Computer Science to Statistics. Over 18 per cent of the student body is enrolled in a gifted/talented student program.
*In addition to completion and drop out rates, the Texas Education Agency rates area schools in part based on results from the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Tests. When the standard student score is 65% or above (% 45 or above in Math and Science) they gain Academically Acceptable status, 70-75% or above Recognized status, and 90% or above, Exemplary status.
