Austin Public Library Proves “Books” and “Cool” Go Hand-in-Hand for Teens

Constructive teen programming is a hot topic, as teenagers have a reputation as old as humanity for straying into troublesome pastimes. The Connected Youth Project
Teens can check out materials such as books, DVDs, and laptops for two hours per day. Youth ages 10 through 16 may use the computers for schoolwork, personal interests, email and chatting, research, and leisure. Each teen center is staffed with a Teen Services Librarian who is there to assist users with their technological and informational needs. Teens are encouraged to read and discover library resources, get to know library staff, and find a place for themselves within the library. Programs, classes, and events encourage creativity, leadership, experimentation, confidence, teamwork, and pride.

The Austin Public Library hosts events for teenagers at each of the branches around the city, with the most teen programming held at the Faulk Central Library, the Yarborough Branch, the Ruiz Branch, and the Terrazas Branch. Programming for teens and older youth includes: Craft Clubs, Drawing Clubs, Book Clubs, Science Clubs, Lego Labs, Art Programs, and Comic Book Clubs.
