Brewster McCracken
Austin City Council memberThere’s little doubt that Brewster McCracken possesses a true love of his Austin community. There’s also little doubt that the feeling is mutual – Austinites demonstrated their appreciation of McCracken’s leadership style and substance at the polls during McCracken’s last run for the Austin City Council by giving him a resounding 72 percent of the vote.
“Austin is an incredible community. With visionary, energetic leadership that protects what we love about Austin and unifies us as we move forward, we can have an even better future,” says McCracken.
McCracken has a proven record of progressive leadership, leading Austin into the “Tech Age” by making Austin an attractive place to do business for “clean industries” such as biotech, digital media, film production and more. Thanks to McCracken’s leadership and encouragement, Austin Energy recently opened its energy grid to accept energy from emerging clean energy companies. The result is Austin Energy is the first public utility in the world to provide this sort of incubator to beta test these new energy technologies, and has given other cities a model to build on as they strive to provide their own clean energy solutions.
In addition, McCracken chairs the Austin City Council’s Emerging Technologies Committee and the Land Use-Transportation Committee. This experience and his knowledge of the city has given him the expertise necessary to author Austin’s commercial Design Standards and Mixed Use Ordinance. The ordinance represents the first comprehensive enactment of Envision Central Texas land use policies, and further demonstrates McCracken’s innate understanding of getting business done in a responsible way that ultimately benefits the city and its residents.
McCracken’s ambitions for Austin are rooted in reality. His background includes attending Princeton University on an Army scholarship, and then later earning his Masters in Public Affairs from the LBJ School at The University of Texas and a law degree from The University of Texas School of Law. He later worked as a prosecutor for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. McCracken’s education and background serves as a driving force both on the political scene and personally. McCracken is known in Austin for his commitment to volunteering for several community organizations involved with preventing child abuse, protecting battered women and isolated seniors as a member of the United Way’s Safety and Security Committee.
“As council member, I have a responsibility to be forward thinking in my initiatives and to be fair in my deliberations and decisions,” says McCracken. “Above all, I know that I have a responsibility to do my best to ensure that every Austinite has a better future and that we leave this place better than we found it.”
“Brewster’s commitment to Austin is unquestionable,” says Brian Talley, Realtor Broker with Regent Property Group. “The personal and professional strength he brings in his position on the Board of Directors for the Regent Property Group means only the best for our clients, as we are driven by the same goals and ideals of providing the means for the enjoyment of a great quality of life for our customers.”
