Shady Hollow Homes
Once home only to the original Shady Hollow subdivision, developments in the area include Shady Hollow Estates, Shady Hollow Meadows, and Barker Ranch at Shady Hollow. Though founded separately and operating under different home owner associations, all of them are generally known under the umbrella of Shady Hollow.
Though most homes were built in the 1980’s and 1990’s, the first Shady Hollow homes were built in the 1970’s. New construction can also still be found in the area.
A mere twenty minute drive from the capital downtown, some consider Shady Hollow a town unto itself, with plentiful shopping, commercial businesses, and schools nearby. Grocery stores such as Albertsons, HEB, and Randall’s are as close as Slaughter Lane to the north. Restaurants in the area include the well-known and well-liked diner Café 1626 and the locally-owned and operated Galaxy Café just up the street at Brodie and Slaughter Lane.
The recently-opened Hill Country Coffee Company sits less than two miles away near the corner of Mancahca and Highway 1626, where it has quickly become a destination for students, live music lovers, and anyone with a sweet tooth.
Shady Hollow’s proximity to so much activity doesn’t make it feel any less like a protected and private enclave. Opportunities to experience nature are abundant in a community bordered by a greenbelt on one side and containing a nature preserve and jogging trails.
Playgrounds, BBQ grills, tennis and basketball courts, and swimming pools can be found at Capistrano Park, Gatling Gun Park, Shady Hollow West Park, and Doe Run Park--all in the immediate vicinity.
Oversized lots and carefully tended yards are standard in the family-oriented, south Austin community of Shady Hollow. Though some of the houses sit on typical 65 foot by 115 foot lots, quarter-acre and even half-acre lots are common to the area. With a nonexistent condo market, single-family homes are the only way to go in a neighborhood dominated by classic brick construction and mostly two-story floor plans.
