Spicewood, Texas is a small community in Burnet County, located alongside the northern banks of Lake Travis. Home of country music legend Willie Nelson, Spicewood is a hub for touring the Texas Hill Country, wildflowers, and the Texas Wine Trail. Spicewood’s first post office opened in 1899, and the town likely was named for the Spicewood (Sassafras) timber on nearby Little Cypress Creek. Some residents claim direct lineage from 19th century settlers, with land deeds originating from the Republic of Texas and Spanish land grants. Nearby small communities utilized the Spicewood post office, but as they declined in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many residents turned to Spicewood as the focus of community life. Amenities
The prime recreational activities of Spicewood are in relation to Lake Travis. Pace Bend Park offers various activities such as hiking, biking, camping, and fishing. With more than nine miles of Lake Travis shoreline, the park features high, limestone cliffs and rocky coves on its west end, along with an interior wildlife preserve. Krause Springs, a 115-acre property on the National Registry of Historical Sites, is considered one of the most beautiful swimming holes in Texas. A hidden oasis in the hill country, it has been privately owned by the Krause Family for over 50 years and features 32 springs, with several feeding a manmade pool and a natural pool that flows into Lake Travis. There is also a rope swing, sunbathing rocks, waterfalls, and a hidden grotto, plus guests can stroll through the Butterfly Gardens. Muleshoe Bend offers a 6.5-mile mountain bike trail, horseback riding, camping, and picnicking. Try the ecologically conscious and physically thrilling Cypress Valley Canopy Tours, and soar above old growth cedar trees in a beautiful natural setting.
