Kurst PreserveThe Village at Western Oaks is home to the Karst Preserve, which is a collection of caves near the entrance of the neighborhood, plus numerous trails and Dick Nichols Park. Village at Western Oaks is an active neighborhood, with residents often seen on the trails, enjoying the parks, and walking their dogs on the neighborhood streets.

Dick Nichols Park on Beckett Road features a large, (sometimes) heated swimming pool and kiddie pool open year-round and a kids’ play area with swings, playscapes, and a water feature. It’s also home to a paved one-mile trail, a basketball court, volleyball and sand volleyball courts, two tennis courts, a multipurpose field, a large picnic shelter, and numerous picnic tables and barbecue pits.

Dick Nichols has direct access to an additional set of neighborhood hike and bike trails, just on the other side of Beckett, connecting to Davis Lane. These gravel trails provide several miles of winding paths in a natural setting, including a wet weather creek, and cross an additional, small playscape and numerous exercise stations.

A feature unique to the Village at Western Oaks is the Karst Preserve, an eight-acre area near the entrance of the neighborhood that is home to five caves, a sinkhole, and a walking trail. The Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, the Texas Cave Management Association, and dozens of other local organizations join together to host the Austin Cave Festival at the Karst Preserve; each year over 1,000 people attend the event, visiting the Get Down and Live Oak Caves, learning about the Edwards Aquifer and Recharge Zone, and participating in cave-related festivities.

The Hampton Branch opened in 1997 and is 8,400 square-feet, with the potential to expand to 15,000 square feet. The Hampton Branch has a walking trail, a reading gazebo, and is one of the busiest branches in the Austin Public Library system. Story times and other events are well attended at this branch.

Just south of the Village at Western Oaks on La Crosse Avenue are the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Veloway, a 3.1 mile asphalt track for bicycling and rollerblading.

Shopping and Restaurants

Thompson, who has lived in the neighborhood during the area’s remarkable growth, said, “Everything you need is close by. Located within the south side of the neighborhood near Slaughter Lane, Escarpment Village is a popular center for residents and is the first true “green” retail center in Austin. The center utilizes cisterns for rainwater harvesting, solar panels for heating and electricity, and a green roof with native plants for insulation and heat reduction. The center, which straddles Escarpment, is anchored by an HEB grocery store. The second busiest Starbucks in the city is on the other side of Escarpment, along with a Waterloo Ice House, Santa Rita Tex-Mex Cantina, Satellite Bistro & Bar, Mangieri’s Pizza Cafe, Austin Scoops, and the newest culinary addition – The District. Popular stores such as Tomlinson's Pet Supplies, and banks such as Wells Fargo round out the convenience factor for Village at Western Oaks residents.

Located at William Cannon and Escarpment, Shops at Arbor Trails is the recipient of the 2009 and 2011 Best Real Estate Award by the Austin Business Journal. Widely visited by Village at Western Oaks residents, the center is anchored by a Whole Foods and a Costco. Many a family has dined at Mandola’s or Chuy’s, picked up dessert cookies at Tiff’s Treats, and then dropped the kids off at The Little Gym to get some shopping done. Haverty’s Furniture, Healthy Pet, Staples, and banks are in the center, as are dozens of smaller stores and restaurants. The Lone Star School of Music is a popular after school location.

An interesting note about the Shops at Arbor Trails is that its developers took a proactive approach to including community input in its creation. Extensive consultations prior to design and construction were held with the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods, and this led to 40 acres of open green space, featuring over 2 1/2 miles of hike and bike trails that interconnect with surrounding neighborhoods; a retention/re-irrigation pond; a dry detention pond to protect the environmentally sensitive Barton Creek Watershed; and only 43% impervious cover. On any given day, visitors will find trail walkers/runners - and often their canine companions - enjoying the gravel trails.

On the southern border of Village at Western Oaks is Parkside Village, within walking distance for some residents. It is anchored by a five-screen Alamo Drafthouse Theater and 400 Rabbits, a stand-alone cocktail lounge. Also in the center are Austin Diagnostic Clinic Circle C, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, TCBY, ATX Bikes, Z Pizza, and more, with construction continuing.
